Key Facts:

  • Bernard Tomic questioned as part of an investigation into suspicious betting
  • Several people linked to the tennis player were questioned
  • The investigation is officially over and its finding has been made public

It’s been revealed that two agencies carried out a joint investigation into suspicious betting activity involving Australian tennis player Bernard Tomic and two of his matches. One of these was his 2022 Open qualifying match against Roman Safiullin.

The agencies behind the investigation were the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) and Whyman, a police strike force. Together, they found there was not enough evidence to bring about criminal charges.

What Prompted the Investigation

A series of bets were placed on Tomic across two matches that attracted the attention of the authorities. These bets reportedly generated winnings of between $10,000 and $180,000.

What made the betting activity all the more suspicious was that three people linked to Tomic placed bets on his two matches. These people knew him directly or were connected to him through a close relative.

During the investigation, the ITIA took Tomic’s phone and asked him about the two matches. As well as the 2022 Open match, there was an earlier one in Turkey that caught the authorities’ attention.

It’s also been confirmed that anti-corruption officers from Tennis Australia worked with both the ITIA and law enforcement officials during the investigation. When asked about the probe, Tomic declined to comment.

The Result

The investigation is over, and no charges have been made against Tomic or any of the three people connected to him. There’s no proof that Tomic did anything illegal. Police and other organizations aren’t looking into the case anymore.

The ITIA keeps a close eye on betting practices and other types of activity that could be suspicious or untoward. In late 2024, it sanctioned three Nigerian players for breaching its Tennis Anti-Corruption Program.

Tomic has continued playing tennis since the investigation ended. The 32-year-old is currently ranked No. 212 in the world and has been ranked as high as 17 before; he’s been playing tennis professionally since 2008.
