World Series of Poker 2023 Creates a New Main Event Record
The World Series of Poker Main Event has broken its player record. Seventeen years have passed since Jamie Gold collected $12 million when overcoming 8,772 players in the $10,000 entry event. In doing so, he beat the largest field in history.
In 2023 the Main Event winner will win $12.1 million but will have to outlast 10,042 players to collect the prize. The ongoing tournament is scheduled to run until Monday, July 17. The final table finishers will play for 11 days.
A total prize pool of $93,399,900 will be divided between the top 15 percent of the field – in 2006 only the top 10 percent received a prize – meaning 1,507 players will enjoy a dividend on their entry fee.
Small Steps to Millionaire Status
The ‘bubble’ was burst early into play on Monday, Day-4 of proceedings. From this point, all players will receive a minimum $15,000 prize. 665th position and upwards will earn at least $30,000.
To guarantee a $50,000 prize, the remaining players must finish among the top 287 of the field. 80th and above will produce a minimum $109,400 return. Of course, the biggest prizemoney resides at the final table. ‘Millionaire’ status begins at eighth position.
2023 World Series Main Event final table payouts:
- $12,100,000
- $6,500,000
- $4,000,000
- $3,000,000
- $2,400,000
- $1,850,000
- $1,425,000
- $1,125,000
- $900,000
Only four previous World Series of Poker Main Event winners have won an eight-figure sum. Jamie Gold was the first. 2014 victor Martin Jacobson, 2019 champion Hossein Ensan and reigning champion Espen Jorstad all collected $10 million. Peter Eastgate, an online qualifier from Ladbrokespoker, collected $9,152,416 in 2008.
A 17th Bracelet for Phil
It will not be the 1989 World Series of Poker Main Event winner Phil Hellmuth that collects the main prize in 2023. The ‘Poker Brat’ made his exit from the tournament on the second day of play.

However, Hellmuth has cashed in ten 2023 World Series of Poker events and acquired his 17th gold bracelet when taking the $10,000 Super Turbo Bounty No-Limit Hold’em at the start of July.
Hellmuth’s latest addition to his jewelry cabinet means he is now seven World Series wins ahead of his closest pursuers, Phil Ivey and Johnny Chan. The late Doyle Brunson also won ten bracelets during his career.
Tim Takes UK Tally to Two
The UK has collected its second bracelet of the 2023 series. However, it did not come on the live felt in Las Vegas Horseshoe or Paris Casinos. Instead, the $500 No-Limit Hold’em Deepstack was played online.
It took twelve-and-a-half hours of play for Shrewsbury’s Tom Hall to overcome the 1,754 players that entered this tournament. With the field taking 937 re-entries, the total prize pool was a handsome $1,210,950.
Tom, using the alias ‘lultaxpayers’, collected $176,920 for his efforts. Americans Daniel Marin, David Novosel, and Steven Touitou completed the top four in a field saturated with North-American players.
