Gambling GGY Spikes With 21% YoY, Total Bets Also Increase
The Gambling Commission (UKGC) has released its latest financial information for the sector, which shows increasing online gross gambling yield (GGY).
Key Facts:
- Data compares Quarter 3 (Q3) of the financial year 2024 to 2025, with Q3 of 2023 to 2024
- The idea is to see how the market has changed in comparative periods over a year
- GGY in Q3 was £1.54 billion, up 21% from Q3 the previous year.
- Total bets and/or spins rose 8% year-on-year to a new peak
Quarter 3 (Q3) of the financial year 2024 to 2025 statistics show a 21% hike in online total gross gambling yield (GGY), for a total of £1.54 billion.
The overall number of total bets and/or spins hit a new peak of £25.9 billion after it increased by 8% year-on-year (YoY).
Gambling Commission data also shows that the average monthly active accounts rose by 1% during the quarter.
Slots Play Rises
Slots have long been the most popular type of game to play at online casinos in the UK. The Gambling Commission data shows that slots GGY increased 15% to £709 million YoY in Q3.
The number of spins was up by 9% to £23.9 billion in the quarter, while statistical release also demonstrated the average monthly active accounts in Q3 rose 10% to 4.4 million per month.
The Gambling Commission noted that the number of spins and GGY for slots have both hit a new high, but this could be explained by one operator’s reclassification of games.
The number of online slots sessions that last for longer than an hour was up by 6% YoY to 10.4 million. Gambling Commission data also showed that the average session for playing slots at the online casino length increased by one minute to 18 minutes.
About 6% of all sessions lasted for over one hour, a slight drop compared to 7% in Q3 in the previous year.
The government recently announced it will set slot stake limits for online casinos in the UK, with players no longer able to bet more than £5 per spin.
Deposit limit changes have also been unveiled by UKGC, which says operators will have to get new players to set financial controls before adding funds to their account for the first time.
Number Of Bets Drops
While the release of new UKGC data showed that slots play was increasing, not all types of gambling became more popular during Q3.
The release showed real event betting GGY increased by more than a third (38%) YoY to £647 million.
UKGC noted that this is the highest GGY for this segment since Q2 of 2021.
However, the data demonstrated that the number of bets was down by 7%. There was also a drop in the average monthly active accounts in Q3, down by 3%.
