Key Facts:

  • MGA is enhancing its regulatory oversight approach this year
  • Body aims to move towards a more evidence-driven and outcomes-focused model
  • Proactive risk management is another key focus for the MGA
  • Strengthening collaboration with licensed operators is also on the agenda for the MGA this year

One of the biggest gambling regulators in the world, the MGA, licenses countless top online casinos and sports betting sites.

Integrity in sports betting is confirmed as an important focus for the organisation in 2025, its new Regulatory Oversight: Supervisory Engagement Efforts 2025 report says.

In a statement, the MGA said the aim of the update ties in with its aim to create a “resilient and sustainable gaming industry and ecosystem”.

MGA Supervisory Toolkit

The MGA said it will focus on three main areas during 2025: risk-based resource allocation, enhanced collaboration, and proactive risk management.

Another part of the update was the reveal of the MGA Supervisory Toolkit, which outlines the current MGA methodology.

This not only includes full-scope and focused inspections, but also a wide range of features such as supervisory meetings and reviews. Mystery shopping techniques are included too.

In its update, the MGA said it is aiming for more proactive engagement with licensees, who operate all over the world.

The MGA said “Through data-driven insights, the Authority gains a deeper understanding of licensees’ operations, identifying key risk factors that require closer attention.”

” Additionally, emerging trends and common findings help guide the Authority in setting clear objectives, while allowing for a more agile, responsive supervisory model that allocates resources efficiently and prioritises areas with the greatest potential impact. Under this approach, supervisory activities will become increasingly proactive and targeted in scope.”

“In this regard, the Authority utilises a diverse set of supervisory engagement methods, to enable it to assess compliance across critical operational and player protection dimensions.”

Increasing Outreach

The MGA said boosting outreach with licensees is included in its planning for 2025. In the update, the regulator said it will “provide clear and practical guidance” in order to help online sports betting sites and casino operators to stay within the rules.

The MGA said: “Outreach efforts will help inform licensees that were not subject to the supervisory intervention, as well as the broader ecosystem, on the expectations of the Authority. This collaborative approach reflects the Authority’s commitment to maintaining a transparent regulatory environment for its stakeholders.”

Revealing its regulatory update for 2025 comes shortly after the MGA issued a statement confirming it has no links with a quartet of websites. It said references to MGA licenses on various websites are “false and misleading”.
