IBIA’s 2024 Sports Betting Integrity Report revealed that over the course of the year, there were 219 suspicious betting alerts.
As the revised figure for 2023 stood at 187, this represents a rise of 17%, perhaps indicating that sports betting ought to be an area of concern.
The suspicious betting alerts covered 12 different sports in total, showing that they were not just focused on major options such as football and tennis.
They occurred across 53 countries in total, indicating this is now an issue all over the world.
Shift From Europe
Previously, the IBIA had found that most of the suspicious betting activity in the world had been focused on Europe, but this is not necessarily the case.
Moreover, IBIA’s 2024 Sports Betting Integrity Report found that Europe’s share is now down at just over a third (37%).
Asia now has almost a fifth (18%) of suspicious betting alerts, while it is becoming a growing problem in Africa, which had 13% of all alerts reported.
Khalid Ali, the IBIA chief executive, said football and tennis remain the main sports where suspicious betting activity is being noted.
He said: “The integrity position remains relatively consistent with previous years, with the focus of suspicious betting remaining primarily on football and tennis.”
“A geographical shift away from European sporting events was observed, but it is too early to determine if this is an ongoing trend. As with all potentially corrupt activity, IBIA is analysing the data and working with its members and global integrity network to implement targeted countermeasures.”
“IBIA’s growing membership are resolute in their commitment to identifying, disrupting, and preventing corrupt sports betting activity and to working with stakeholders.”
Problem Areas
According to the IBIA 2024 Sports Betting Integrity Report, Czechia (19) and Türkiye (11) saw the highest number of suspicious cases during the year.
Alerts in Asia have more than doubled, having increased from 17 to 40, while Africa saw a big rise from 16 to 28.
As a result of IBIA being used in sporting investigations, in all 33 matches were deemed to have been corrupted. In 2024, there were 17 sanctions against clubs, players and officials due to betting violations.
The IBIA 2024 Sports Betting Integrity Report found football and tennis made up over three-fifths (61%) of all the suspicious betting alerts last year.
There were 75 suspicious betting alerts for football, and table tennis came in third behind tennis, having seen 36 alerts during 2024.
