Key Facts:

  • Crown London is a private members club located in Mayfair
  • Casino was known as Aspinalls before Crown purchased the venue in 2011
  • Wynn’s focus is largely on the US but it is now looking further afield
  • Crown plans to focus more on its operations in Australia instead

Crown London in Mayfair was known as Aspinalls prior to 2011 when it changed ownership.

More changes are coming for the Curzon Street venue after it was announced that the US-based casino company Wynn Resorts had bought it from Crown.

The history of the venue dates back decades, having initially been a key part of London’s high society when it operated as the White Elephant Club, a fine dining restaurant.

Wynn Resorts will now be looking into how to make it a top London casino to visit.

Purchase Price Unknown

Neither Wynn nor Crown have confirmed the price of the deal to sell the London casino site.

The Mayfair casino will join the roster of Wynn properties that currently includes the likes of Wynn Las Vegas, Encore Las Vegas and Encore Boston Harbor.

Wynn is also working on developing its first casino property in New York City, while it is well underway with the construction of the Wynn Al Marjan Island resort in the UAE.

Expected to open in 2027, it is set to be the first integrated resort in the UAE with Wynn’s purchase of the Crown London site showing its global growth goals are aligning.

Wynn Resorts chief executive Craig Billings described London as a global gateway city.

Focusing On Australia

For Crown, the decision to sell to Wynn comes as the company makes major moves under its new chief executive David Tsai, who took the role permanently in October, having initially run the company on an interim basis.

Tsai said in a statement announcing the news: “The sale of Crown London aligns with our strategy to invest in our Australian assets and customer offering to deliver sustainable growth for the business in our core market.

“Our priority is to deliver new and elevated experiences for our guests in Melbourne, Perth and Sydney in line with our strategy to be the leading entertainment destinations in Australia.”

As well as the casino floor, Crown London is home to a top restaurant run by the executive chef, Nicola Duccheschi.

The casino floor has plenty of classic casino games to play, such as blackjack, roulette, and baccarat, and it also has various signature rooms to enjoy while playing.

Wynn is yet to give details about the company’s future plans for its new London casino site.
