Boyd Gaming & MGM Resorts Team Up For US Online Sports Betting

Since the legalization of sports betting in the huge US betting market firms have been positioning themselves to dominate and gain the biggest market share.

The recent news that  MGM Resorts International and Boyd Gaming Corporation have partnered and will create a major player in the gambling online marketplace is an example of the process. This deal reveals that partnering to enter the online and mobile gaming business can have great influence on online mobile sports betting, online casino gambling, and online poker.

New and emerging online gambling jurisdictions are being targeted first by the partners where either one operates a terrestrial casino resort and online licenses are currently available. Pennsylvania is one such state that legalized online gambling and sports betting in late 2017 and has invited existing casino license holders to apply for licenses to operate. Boyd has just acquired a brick and mortar casino resort near Philadelphia so that half of the tem will be able to apply for a licence from the Keystone State.

The MGM-Boyd partnership deal has created a powerful lobbying enterprise that could turn some reluctant jurisdictions into agreeing that online gambling and sports betting should be legal everywhere in the USA. The two gambling firms have physical casinos in 15 states together.  A press release from MGM, said the goal of the partnership was, “to significantly increase each company’s market access and customer base throughout the United States.”

MGM Resorts Chairman and CEO Jim Murren, said, “We are excited to team yet again with Boyd Gaming on this unprecedented partnership, which allows us to fully engage with the almost 30 million M life Rewards members throughout the country,” adding, “We look forward to expanding our entertainment options for guests beyond their visits to our land-based resorts.”

Boyd Gaming President and CEO Keith Smith also commented, “Our industry is evolving, providing opportunities for growth through new forms of gaming like online and mobile gaming,”
