POKER PROS HEAD FOR THE LAND OF THE LONG WHITE CLOUD

New Zealand casino is the venue for a major new tournament

Christchurch Casino (which also operates Kiwi online casino) has been selected as the venue for the New Zealand Poker Championships scheduled for 1 to 8 April this year.

Some of the world's greatest poker players are expected to enter the competition, with a total of around 150 players from around the world taking part. Among them, renowned Kiwi poker player Lee Nelson, who recently won the Aussie Millions poker tournament.

The winner of the Championships will take away the lion's share of a $200 000 prize pool and receive a fully sponsored seat at this year's World Series of Poker in Las Vegas.

Christchurch Casino's Gaming Manager, Peter Arbuckle, is in no doubt that the competition will attract some of the world's best poker players: "Not only is this New Zealand's only nationwide poker competition with the richest prize pool, it is one of only a few seats for the World Series that has been offered in the Southern Hemisphere."

The week will begin on Saturday, 1 April 2006 with a '$20,000 Celebrity Challenge for Charity' in which the winning celebrity will donate their $20,000 winnings to their charity of choice.

The following day the Canterbury Championships will be held with the South Island Champs following on Wednesday, 5 April. The New Zealand Poker Championships will be held over Friday, 7 and Saturday, 8 April 2006.
